The possibilities are endless

EU to focus on ‘decarbonisation’ to become competitive with US, China

The European Union will focus on the “decarbonisation” of its economy in an effort to make itself competitive with the US and China, the bloc’s top civil servant European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said.

“We are roughly as good as the US at creating start-ups. But when it comes to scale-ups, we are doing much worse than our competitors,” she claimed.

“A start-up from California can expand and raise money all across the United States. But a start-up in Europe has to deal with 27 different national barriers. We need to make it easier to grow in Europe.”

Von der Leyen said her decision to appoint a new Commissioner for Start-Ups, Research and Innovation was evidence that the bloc would soon make progress on the issue.

The word 'evidence' in the last quoted sentence has entertainment value all of its own, apart from the overall fantasy. Why not appoint a new Commissioner for Doing Better Than the US and China? That would be evidence of something too.

The possibilities are endless. A new Commissioner for Doing Nothing Proposed by Ursula von der Leyen for example.

Making themselves competitive by decarbonisation... tying one hand behind their backs?

I wonder if she has considered the outlandish idea that scale-ups might thrive where coal is mined and oil is drilled for. I know it's a crazy idea, but apparently there is some mysterious link between businesses and cheap energy. Worth exploring...

DJ - both hands if that's the decarbonised approach.

Sam - cheap energy? Yes it is worth exploring, because they obviously haven't considered it. Appoint a Commissioner with a budget and something could come of it before long.

Has she been to California recently? (By sailing ship and bicycle obviously. Ox carts are a bit slow, and ox farts are worse than shipping firewood to UK for boiling the oceans)
It is booming with Start -Ups. For example - err - Crypto currency, High speed railroads, a booming film industry, American Riviera Orchard, and so on. An incredible booming, and I mean literally incredible, economy bringing housing for everybody, ever more affordable, food, health care, education, safety in public places.
But why is she worried. Germany is quickly becoming an equivalent Nirvana.

Doonhamer - I think she's just a worrier concerned that they don't have enough Commissioners to do everything as California does it. Step one could be to invite American Riviera Orchard to the EU and see if a jam boom perks things up.
