Tough but fair

Starmer rules out re-running general election as petition gathers signatures

Asked about the petition on ITV’s This Morning programme on Monday, Sir Keir said: “Look, I remind myself that very many people didn’t vote Labour at the last election.

“So, what my focus is on is the decisions that I have to make every day.”

He characterised decisions taken so far by his Government as “tough but fair”.

I don't know what the petition count is now, over two million when I last looked as Son and I chuckled over the speed of it. Only a gesture, but a successful one.

It's no good asking Starmer about it though. What matters now is the buzz behind his back, what his whispering colleagues say in the bar and what they think can be done about him as a political liability.

It's too soon yet... but what if the numbers of TV interviews reduce, only newspaper interns are sent to press announcements, and anti Labour posters appear in roadside fields throughout the land? Starmer might stick like a limpet but others will scent blood in the water - or at least realise that the country is not ready for dour socialism (again).

DJ - yes the blood is in the water and although Labour is short of talent, so is Keir Starmer and by now his MPs all know it. There must be some who think they couldn't be worse.

There's also the effect it has on Starmer himself. We know he is thin-skinned and doesn't shrug off criticism, so it would be good to give him as many reminders of his uselessness and unpopularity as we can. I was a bit disappointed that veterans didn't turn their backs on him on Armistice Day. But he certainly appears to avoid going out in public now. Politicians probably review how well they are going down with the public, and how effectively they are getting their message across. I imagine a couple of young SpADs nervously shuffling and avoiding eye contact before giving him a summary of his social media coverage.

Sam - yes he does appear to avoid going out in public, maybe he is allergic to eggs. It would interesting to know what his inner circle says to him and how they say it. Presumably it's their job to tell it as it is in one way or another so maybe he avoids them. I wonder how close to the edge he is?
