Viewer drought

Humiliation for BBC as viewers of major £45m channel tune in for just 10 seconds

The BBC Scotland channel secured an audience share of just 0.12% of British TV viewers last month, with the average viewer spending just 10 seconds watching.

The standalone BBC Scotland channel has been struggling to attract viewers, with a mere 0.12% of British TV viewers tuning in during October. The average viewer reportedly spent just 10 seconds watching before switching channels, in the latest humiliation to the public broadcaster.

The numbers are here. For example, average daily minutes spent watching BBC News is reported to be 1 min 38 sec. Far too long in my view.

Like any sensible chap I never watch BBC news. Even on 9/11 I watched on a Chilean station.

Crikey, how do you get an average of ten seconds before changing channels? The Scots must have a really brief phrase meaning "Oh, not that shite again..."

The switch-off probably happens as soon as the first woke or environmental sermon appears in the programme. That would explain the ten seconds.

One’s only possible reaction is “Oh dear what a pity never mind”.

dearieme - we never watch BBC News either. I first heard about 9/11 while at work. Still remember it.

Sam - or "quick where's the remote."

Peter - yes. Start the stopwatch - BBC Scotland switched on - something woke or environmental crops up - Stop the stopwatch - took about 10 seconds.

1m 38sec? That's when you come back from putting the kettle on and realise the news has started, before switching over

Bucko - good point - switch on TV, go out to put kettle on and get cups or mugs out, nip back, change channel for something worth watching.

I was at work too. A colleague came into my office with the news. He said we couldn't log in to the news services; they were obvs overwhelmed. So I said there must be somewhere in the world that's covering this but with most of its own population still in bed. Chile! From the mix of English and Spanish and, above all, the videos, we learnt a lot. After maybe half an hour we got a grip and went back to work.

Anon - I was in a meeting so didn't get to browse the news until later. As far as I remember it wasn't clogged up by then.
