Met Office issues urgent 10-hour yellow warning for fog - 'avoid travel'
Drivers are being warned of difficult driving conditions overnight and for rush-hour in the morning (Thursday) as the Met Office issue multiple yellow warnings for fog.
The autumnal weather phenomenon is blanketing vast areas of the country overnight from Belfast to Berkshire, and covering parts of Wales, Northern Ireland and England.
In all yellow warnings for the eyesight dulling weather have been issued for six regions of the UK.
Eyesight dulling weather eh? An urgent warning too. I look back fondly on those long-gone days when urgent wasn't the normal state of affairs. May as well go along with it now urgent means nothing much, although it does seem to mean "I don't want to be fobbed off" when phoning the GP.
The Met Office could push the urgent button a little harder by giving names to this new eyesight dulling phenomenon. It's probably caused by climate change so we urgently need to ban something like open fires in case pensioners don't freeze in winter.
We recently had storm Bert so why not press on urgently, begin with the first letter of the alphabet and call this one Fog Angela?

The urgent warning for fog was on our local radio this morning, but the drive to work was clear. Last week we had an urgent warning for snow, then got less than an inch.
I suppose when something actually does happen, they will have to use the red warning. Then when something happens that actually does require a warning, they will have to use the super big cheese bad red warning
Any warning that requires a "we really mean it this time" for actually worthwhile warnings is already corrupted.
Named fogs? What a great idea!
Bucko - yes, it isn't worth paying much attention to yellow warnings, they just seem to suggest that the Met Office is fairly certain that the weather won't be great. They will need a colour for the super big cheese bad red warning though.
DJ - and "we really mean it this time" is all a yellow warning seems to indicate - poor weather very likely.
Peter - although "Foggy" would be better, as in Foggy Rachel.
Org with big budget is required to justify the expense by producing results, or at least something. There is not much in the way of tangible results so it will have to be some other thing. Employs PR team (at great expense) to show something. PR needs to justify great expense so makes up a big fuss about something (or nothing).
Anon - yes, the PR team seems to orchestrate the headlines and insist on them making a big fuss about nothing much. Maybe scientists behind the scenes don't much like it, but they don't seem to be running that side of it.
