The Mood

The mood is tense among Tory MPs who think most things 'weak' Number 10 touches get worse

Some in Number 10 think the disquiet amongst Conservative MPs will die down once they realise the prime minister is going to stick true to his word and is not about to call a May election...

Rishi Sunak's team no longer denies that things are bad. The mood amongst MPs is febrile, unhappy, tense and uncertain.

I don't think they care enough to be moody, if they did things would be better. No matter, we'll soon hear the mood music from Starmer's magic touch.

I bet Sunak can’t wait for the election to be over and done with. I’m sure he’ll already have the job offer from Golden Sacks or similar tucked away somewhere, and when the removal vans leave Downing Street they’ll probably be going straight to Heathrow.

time to consider legacies and the history books. Cameron is still a player, having slid down the greasy pole only to bounce back to Foreign Secretary. He can probably convince himself that he has done a reasonable job. I recently saw an article claiming that Theresa May was a sensible centrist, holding firm and not being panicked into anything worse. (I didn't read it, but the fact that there is such an article is significant.) Boris retains some support among his chums, of course. Truss can see herself as the victim of a coup, and the expounder of low-tax radicalism that may yet bear fruit. But Sunak? Perhaps he thinks that he will be remembered for the latest nonsense about "hate speech" and handing a bajillion quid's worth of unnecessary protection to Muslims.

He's so out of touch that I actually feel sorry for him.

Peter - yes, must be looking forward to getting back to real life. I don't know why he ever bothered.

Sam - "He's so out of touch that I actually feel sorry for him."

It's odd, but so do I. As if he was pushed into something he can't do.

James - but speeding up.
