Ex-Tory MP Lee Anderson defects to Reform

Former Conservative Party Vice-Chairman Lee Anderson has defected to Reform UK.

Mr Anderson was suspended as a Conservative MP after refusing to apologise for claims Islamists had "control" of London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

The defection ends weeks of speculation about the Ashfield MP and TV presenter's future.

Mr Anderson said he had been given the chance to "speak out in Parliament on behalf of millions of people up and down the country" who support Reform.

I'm not a Lee Anderson fan, but there are tenuous but obvious positive aspects to this.

For example, as voters we should see some benefits from a more fluid political arena. To begin dealing with the current political mess, we probably need to see diminished party loyalty and a greater inclination for voters and politician to desert inadequate parties.

I'm not a fan either... but contrary to normal logic I think you could argue that the Conservative Party has left him, not the other way around.

He apparently leaves some other like-minded MPs behind... I guess they are too worried about leaving all they know for the sake of an uncertain future. But unless they step up to the change in politics they will probably be left behind.

When after the 2019 election, Boris Johnson commented that the Red Wall seats won by the Conservatives were only 'lent' to the Tories and it was up to the Party to repay that trust, I remember thinking, " and just watch them squander it and let them down".
Another of my 'rocket science like' predictions Sherlock.

DJ - I think the party has left a lot of voters too. There must be a number of Tory MPs who are dissatisfied with the party and likely to lose their seats so some may think it worth making their protest the Anderson way.

Tammly - yes you were right, the Tories made almost no attempt to keep the seats.

I (lifelong conservative voter) am certainly not supporting them this time. After the endless failures and the breaking of every single promise and committment, plus the generalised incompetence around practically everything, they don't deserve it at all.

Except, except...special considerations apply North of the border. One is morally obliged to vote for whoever is most likely to defeat the Nats. I shall check the polls - it might have to be Labour, despite the undoubted lunacy they'll bring and the damage they'll do. What a dilemma.

I’ve a longish post on this tomorrow.

Peter - it certainly is a dilemma for you, I'm sure I'd end up voting for any party with a chance of beating the Nats. It's what we often end up doing, vote against rather than for.

James - I'll watch out for it. May all fizzle out, but I hope not.
