Surely 1300 won't be enough

Sadiq Khan promises 1,300 new police officers - but only with a Labour Government

The mayor, who is running for an historic third term at City Hall, said that if he is re-elected, he will put in place “around 1,300” additional neighbourhood police officers, PCSOs and special constables.

But he warned: “I can only guarantee a restoration of neighbourhood policing if both I win and the Labour party wins at the next general election.”

I see - so if London suffers the double whammy of a Labour government and another bout of Sadiq Khan, lots more policing will be required on the streets. Well - his concerns are easy enough to understand, but I doubt if 1300 will be enough.

But in the unpleasant after effects of a Khan/Labour win 1,300 extra police persons may not be enough - and that could be a deliberate choice.

So certain crimes could be ignored - shop lifting and burglary. Especially if you are known not to support Khan/Labour. Plus rare resources could be allocated on a lottery basis.

"If you support ULEZ press 1 to speak to a Crime Consolation Officer, press 2 if you are Transgender, press 3 to enter this week's competition for attention, in any other case thank you for your call."

"...neighbourhood Police officers"....
Good luck for PC Abi Cohen as he patrols Tower Hamlets.
"......PCSO's" ....
Uniformed; not Police officers; no powers, but cheaper.
".....Special Constables"..... Uniformed volunteers; not paid, so cheaper than PCSOs;
have Police powers but wary of using them within 50 yards of a mosque, unless of the RoP, in which case 'no offences seen or reported'.
What could go wrong?

Khan probably wants to bring in a "morality police" who can beat women for showing too much flesh in public. It's progress of sorts, I guess, given the recent publicity about serving officers going in for kidnapping and rape and murder.

AKH: I'll be away from the computer for a week or so, returning in April to share my usual inane grumbles.

DJ - I agree, certain crimes may have to be ignored. Eventually your phone options may not be wide of the mark, hot on political crimes and the rest are NHS or insurance jobs.

Bucko - we recently saw what looked like a police recruit training session at our local shopping centres. One recruit with a head scarf looked as if she was no more than five feet tall and about six stone.

penseivat - what could go wrong? Nothing Sadiq Khan will ever admit to, but I bet you are right, it will be a low budget PCSO gesture.

Sam - it's not difficult to imagine visible policing evolving into a form of "morality police" in certain areas.

Your grumbles aren't at all inane, but have a good time while you are away.

Apart from the headscarf, you've just described my sister in law. She's currently milking her one year maternity allowance, before quitting the job entirely to look after the kid
