As ever it is impossible to be certain without being a fly on the wall, but I'm with the cynics on this one - the message here is political. If we can detain this rich tennis celebrity we can detain you - think about it.

Agreed. There is also an international murmuring that there is one rule for the plebs and another rule for the elite. There had to be a bit of high-profile exemplary justice here, so Djokovich has to take one for the team.

Now all they have to do is make sure that no fully vaxxed player, ball boy/girl of umpire collapses on camera.
Better have a squirrel, or quokka ready.
