Covid: Drakeford accuses Johnson of failing to protect England

Mark Drakeford has accused Boris Johnson of failing to take the necessary action to protect people in England from Covid.

"The one country that stands up as not taking action to protect its population is England," said the first minister.

The comments come as Mr Drakeford announced Covid restrictions would not be relaxed in Wales.

The differences between England and Wales seem quite superficial. The main differences are to do with big sporting fixtures (Wales allows small ones) and nightclubs, which might be significant but are hardly critical. And most of the minor differences can't be enforced anyway.

For several years, we have heard that the Welsh NHS is worse than the English. So this is looking more and more like an attempt to prevent longer waiting lists and lost records and public complaints, because if any more of the workforce are off with mild flu the system will slide yet further into chaos.

And, of course, if Drakeford doesn't sound off and act like a proper politician from time to time, then what's he actually for?

Sam - yes, that's an aspect of the damage done by devolution. Leaders such as Drakeford have to sound off from time to time. What is he for? To create dissatisfaction, it's all he can do politically.
