Time for them to go

Climate change: 'Your future depends on the future of the planet,' Prince Charles warns children in documentary

The Prince of Wales said his grandson, George, is already learning about the impact of climate change on young people.

I've never been a republican but times change. Charles, William and Harry are sufficient to convince this old curmudgeon that the monarchy should not go beyond Elizabeth II.

Actively promoting a weird, intrinsically dishonest and totalitarian form of nature worship is not what our monarchy should be doing. Promoting it to children is even worse. To my mind nothing good will ever come from dragging the whole sorry monarchy business any further.

Arguably the Monarchy have represented abstract Authority rather than exercised it concretely - at least for the last century or so.

The modern Royals seem to have boarded the Celebrity Express, and abandoned any abstract ideals. Prince Charles being the half-in/half-out bridge between generations.

Although I would be quite happy for the current generation of Royals to fade back into the background I can see one benefit of the monarchy continuing... avoiding the 'need' for a President. There are quite a few politicians I would have dreaded seeing as President - most of the 'elder statesmen' had already had their minds corrupted somewhat by power and adulation.

I'm afraid that our dear Queen has had a dreadful time with her philandering lot, and deserved much better than most of them bonking around and generally being the wrong sort of people to be getting all that pomp and circumstance 'bowed' in their direction.

The latest P.Andrew saga is a nasty reminder of what privilege does when it's never earned.

I agree that as heads of state go heredity generally beats elected. It's not so much then political class in that position that I fear most. More the celebrity class, the actors, crooners, and comedians. We won't be laughing then.

On things climate, have you seen the awful twitted video of that Scandinavian green child dancing and singing to an hysterical audience of children? It's as frightening as it's funny.

As others have said we will then have a President thrust upon us with all the layers of state that will go with it, we are are already over represented in the two houses by some margin so another layer would be egging it.
But royalty doesn't in its current form seem very inviting, it serves no real purpose anymore, and as we currently can ignore it perhaps , like our two party system we seem to have a choice of the lesser of two evils.

I think the problem is that the royals never get educated, which means that they just absorb and regurgitate whatever they experience. It's pot luck. Show me the advisor and I will show you the Royal.

DJ - "The modern Royals seem to have boarded the Celebrity Express, and abandoned any abstract ideals. Prince Charles being the half-in/half-out bridge between generations." Well put, it's why they can't take the monarchy anywhere useful.

Scrobs - I feel rather sorry for ER, she doesn't really deserve this kind of inglorious decline.

Andy - I deliberately avoided the video of the Scandinavian green child dancing. I sometimes think she has been inflicted on us to hammer home how powerless we are in the face of such silliness.

Wiggia - to my mind getting rid of the monarchy should require some kind of written constitutional alternative which would give us a chance to reach a better balance of power. May not work out, but it would at least be an opportunity.

Sam - they also seem to lack the curiosity required to extend their education via their own efforts. Their opportunities in that respect must be enormous, but apparently wasted.
