Two headlines, one porky pie

Gas boilers face ban in homes within years under new government legislation

The Future Homes Standard, being brought forward by the government, will mean developers must ensure that new-builds are only fitted out with electric heat pumps or non-gas alternatives.

Cop29: Keir Starmer vows 'ambitious' 81 per cent cut to UK emissions but won't be ‘telling people how to live’

The increased UK target, which slashes greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels, is in line with the recommendation of the Climate Change Committee.

But the Prime Minister has said he will not be “telling people how to live their lives” as part of plans to reach the target.

Illustrates Starmer's literal approach to lying. He isn't going to send us a letter telling us how to live our lives. He is going to have laws and regulations drafted which effectively tell us the same thing, step by step. Central heating is just one among many.

We need a new tumble dryer: should we buy one with a heat pump? (There seem to be few vented electrically-heated dryers left on the market.)

See also ‘But we aren’t telling pensioners to turn off their heating’ which will, I suspect, be the official response when the first hypothermia cases start hitting the headlines.

dearieme - we've used a condenser, unvented tumble dryer for years and it works well. Heat pump versions seem similar but supposedly use less electricity so I suppose we'll replace our old one with a heat pump version if we ever need a new one.

Macheath - yes, not untrue but disgracefully misleading seems to be the Starmer way.

Someone pointed out recently that heat pumps are going to be prime targets for thieves. They'll break in to steal a conventional boiler, so a couple of grand's worth of kit on the patio...

Sam - yes, those I've seen look like prime theft targets. I don't know how long it would take and they look heavy, but I bet there are thieves already tooled up for it. Would we hear about a wave of heat pump thefts? I'm not sure that we would.

The best clothes dryer is an Aga.

Peter - with no Aga, our tumble drier is expensive to run but okay when we can't hang clothes on the line outside.
