Possibly the poorest quality work

Prince Philip statue to be removed after Cambridge council brands it 'poorest quality work'

sculpture in Cambridge said to represent Prince Philip is to be pulled down after the city council branded it “possibly the poorest quality work” it had seen.

The controversial artwork is understood to have cost £150,000, and is supposed to resemble the late Duke of Edinburgh in his role as vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

The abstract 13ft bronze - named The Don - takes the form of a towering figure, in flowing black-and-gold academic robes and a mortarboard.

It's not the poorest quality work I've seen. A few years ago I saw a sketch by Tracey Emin which was certainly worse than that - and the dealer wanted money for it.

If only HRH were still around to give us his opinion of the thing!

M R James had the perfect phrase in one of his short stories, describing a man terrified by an apparition with ‘a horrible, an intensely horrible face of crumpled linen’.

They could have had some crap scribble by Banksy, but make sure it was done far away from prying eyes!

I used to love going to work in Cambridge, the city just hummed, but luckily, I stay well away now!

£150,000 ... there's one every minute.

Macheath - yes, HRH would have made a pithy comment to puncture its pretensions. I remember the crumpled linen description, horribly vivid.

Scrobs - I visited Cambridge one day long ago, but don't remember it. You are right, a hidden Banksy scribble would have been better.

James - especially when it's not their money.

I'm surprised it wasn't painted in rainbow colours. They couldn't take it down then

Bucko - that's an idea, rainbow protection for public monuments.

Actually, they could just put some sort of monarchial caption on it, chuck in a bit about slavery etc., and the dumb studes of various 'colleges' in Cambridge would chuck it into the river as soon as look at you...

Scrobs - good idea, we could get rid of quite a few things that way.
