Google reveals $1bn UK data centre it says will create jobs and 'boost growth of AI'

The announcement marks a further win as Google joins Microsoft in boosting its UK footprint amid its battle for data centre and AI supremacy.

This video from 3 years ago gives an idea of what these facilities are like. Presumably the UK facility will be similar.

In the 1980s, I had a neighbour who worked for a company that made crystals for use in guided weapons systems. He spent a lot of time visiting a Naval base to discuss and refine the product. There was a lot of fencing, barbed wire, CCTV, and checkpoints, but Darren on the gate obviously got to know him after much friendly chat, and waved him through.

Until one day, when he bobbed out of the guardhouse with a sten gun, and halted the car.

"Hi, Darren! What's going on, mate?"

"Sorry, Sir. New orders. There's some kerfuffle in the Middle East, we're now on a higher level of alert. I'm afraid I've got to have a dekko at your pass".

"No worries, Darren, here you go. But tell me - what would you have done if I drove on? Would you have shot me?"

"Certainly, Sir, if they'd given me any frickin' bullets for the gun!"

Sam - an interesting comparison. Today, spying may be carried from the other side of the world with no need to get past Darren at all.

Chilling, AKH, chilling. Going to nick Sam's tale too if he doesn't mind.
