Nefarious actors

Climate misinformation is mutating on YouTube – and the platform is profiting

Climate misinformation is rapidly mutating across social media, allowing nefarious actors to skirt restrictions and continue to profit, according to a new report...

Researchers analysed thousands of hours of YouTube content from the past six years and found that “old” climate crisis denial – which claims that global heating is not happening and burning fossil fuels is not the cause – is giving way to a new type of misleading content intended to muddy the waters.

The report, by the non-profit research group Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), found that this “New Denial” falls into a few broad groups: that the impacts of global heating are beneficial or harmless; that climate solutions won’t work; and that climate science and the climate movement can’t be trusted.

Of course the nutty aspect of this is that you are not allowed to have a contrary opinion without being grouped with those nefarious actors skirting restrictions and continuing to profit.

Oh well, what do we say about this kind of twaddle?

We could point out that claims which are too nutty to analyse do highlight a nefarious approach to skirting reality and unfortunately, not an uncommon approach. But as ever, we already knew that.

I understand that the Clintons, Obama, Kerry, Gore, and Gates have all bought mansions on various coasts, despite claiming that "man made climate change" will cause the oceans to rise. This makes these people either liars or morons. I'll leave it up to you to decide which.

Interesting that having a different opinion about science is now investigated by a group which counters hatred. As Rob Henderson has pointed out, an effective way of disposing of an argument or view is not to disprove it, but to show that it is associated with low status. Haters, eh? These denialists need a visit from the police about their paedophilia and homophobia.

Center for Countering Digital Hate … someone delegated to put out some lies today.

I'm heartily sick of these people who call people like me - sceptical of certain unproven scientific theories, 'deniers' like some sort of holy writ.

Penseivat - in their case I'll go for liars. Their behaviour gives it away with private jets and houses by the sea.

Sam - the word 'haters' seems to be creeping in all over the place as a means to achieve what you describe - to associate ideas and people with low status. It's even fairly common in online football comments.

James - and often lies about the nature of a simple disagreement.

Tammly - it's just evidence of conditioning. People don't see their language as conditioned even when it clearly is.

James - unlike the confident predictions made a few years ago.

"Liars or morons" I'll go with both, or maybe moronic liars?

Dave - I think they are liars, although it isn't easy to tell when they constantly speak in public like morons.

"thousands of hours of YouTube content from the past six years"...

That must have gone back to the time that all the stupid politicians, greedy money men, useful idiots etc., started to get their money out of the scam!

Scrobs - and thousands of hours of YouTube content isn't very much anyway, so they had to select it with care.
