The main thing that strikes me about this bloke is that he has researched everything, is well-informed, and knows something about the technology. He's also smart enough to do all the costings.

So welcome to the new two-tier motoring regime. Blokes like him will be able to keep up with the wealthy for a few years. They'll be in the elite by dint of expertise, rather than paying someone else to repair and upgrade. And good for them. Then they'll fall behind with the rest of us. And elderly ladies who used to potter around in their little Renaults, or poor people who could keep going because old Ron round the corner could sort out repairs....?

Not a hope.

Sam - that's what strikes me too. He has been deceived into entering that two-tier motoring regime. Human ingenuity and market demand may change that possibility, but it doesn't seem to be the favoured outcome.

So the 'range anxiety' that everyone worries about, and is poo-poohed by the manufacturers and activists is real after all...

Having spent many hours stuck on motorways, with traffic at a standstill, in freezing conditions, I'd give a million splonders for a AAA battery to keep me warm, before the tow-truck arrives to take me away...

DJ - some batteries may be considerably more charge/discharge durable than others, so good information is bound to take years to come out, especially as manufacturers and activists try to suppress it.

Scrobs - this one wouldn't keep you warm for long though. You would be better off making a little fire with the million splonders.

Doonhamer - didn't help though, although there could be a warning in there.

It isn't, of course.

The favoured outcome is that only those and such as those will have private transport, and gradually more people are realising this.

My hope is that once enough people understand what's going on there will be some sort of massive reaction and our betters will be forced to back-track.

So far, though, it's not looking very likely.

Yes, I spotted that as well. Perhaps he should be having a word with "The Lord" (his particular version), and see if he can offer any help!

As for changing a few cells in an 8 year old battery pack - forget it!!! You'll be wasting time & money because others will start failing soon. Also, mixing dissimilar cells is never advised, because of the risk that the weakest cells will be "reversed charged" once they're flat, while the better ones still have some charge left.

Dave - I agree, changing a few cells isn't going to work. From what he says it's a choice between risking a replacement battery or scrap the car.

I worked on battery manufacture for eight years in my final job. Microdave is absolutely right.

Tammly - from what I read, the battery chemistry is still being developed but it's a slow business.
