The fake fuse

Ed Davey: byelection win shows ‘Lib Dems are back’ in south-west England

Leader says party will use victory in Somerton and Frome as springboard to further success

In keeping with a tradition begun in Chesham and Amersham, when Davey demolished a mocked-up blue wall, there was another heavily literal photo opportunity, this time involving yellow confetti being fired from a blue mock circus cannon.

Standing in front of a wall of Lib Dem placards, Davey held a giant cardboard match to the cannon, emblazoned with the words “Get these clowns out of No. 10!” while behind him an activist used an actual flame to light a fake fuse, ahead of a countdown to the confetti burst.

A fake fuse describes "Sir" Ed quite well - he isn't going to set off any political fireworks. I suppose he has done quite well out of it though.

Yet I'm surprised he associated himself with an image of clowns and circuses, even as a gibe at the other lot. Lib Dems supposedly see themselves as politically sophisticated, but Ed is clearly telling them they aren't. Some may even notice.

Is that by any chance the Ed who played such a large role in the persecution of those poor bloody postmasters? Do you know, I think it might be.

He's also one of the Eds who imposed so much "green" madness on the nation.

dearieme - I do believe it is the same Ed. Not a great track record, but he is a Lib Dem.

I sought out a video of the event, and it's totally underwhelming. It's as if the Lib Dems had handed over the stunt to a local junior school, who came up with the idea, the slogan, and the technology.

It would of course have been more factually accurate to dispense with all of it, and pay the outgoing Tory sex & drugs chap to stand in the marketplace and shoot himself in the foot.

Correct, Dearieme!

As to be expected, the 'enquiry' seems to be just admitting a few non-facts, and don't forget that all this started when Blair was in power... Davey even said that he wished now that he had done more. Yeah, right!

But, AK, the thought of one loopy Ed in Nulab is bad enough, but yet another hanging around is somewhat concerning...

The message that the cynical might draw is that the Lib Dems are a cardboard party.

Can you imagine the Labour Party or the Conservatives pulling such stunts? Confetti doesn't grow on trees(!) you know.

Sam - thanks - I've just taken a look at the video and as you say - totally underwhelming junior school stuff. Weird to watch - like a Captain Pugwash cannon.

Scrobs - when Davey says he wishes he had done more, presumably he means more than nothing at all.

DJ - yes they are a cardboard party. Maybe there should be some kind of check that MPs sitting in the House are actually three-dimensional and not cardboard replicas.
