Prince William at centre of dramatic royal U-turn as Queen protected him from 'great risk' Prince Harry faced

Prince Harry was not protected against the "risks" of military combat in the same way that his brother was.

General Sir Mike Jackson tells an ITVX documentary called The Real Crown that the risk of war was deemed too great for the heir to the thrown.

I'm pleased to see they have issues with intrusive spellcheckers too. Or maybe it should have been "heir to be thrown".

Did Prince Harry face great risk? Stories have arisen about his service in Aghsnistan, where his nickname, allegedly, was "X Box Harry"; his 'sprinting' to his helicopter was either a PR photograph occasion, him needing the toilet,or a run to a shelter after warnings of shelling. He did fly helicopters operationally, and he should be commended for that, but the general consensus was that no senior officer would risk his career by ensuring Lt Wales was on the front line. I may be wrong, but for an admitted killer of Taliban terrorists, Harry seems so pussy whipped these days, I fear that he says what the Meg wants him to say. At least, Uncle Andrew placed his helicopter in the most dangerous positions when his ship was being attacked during the Falklands war.

Man up, Harry, because we've all thrown up.

Penseivat - that's the question isn't it - did Prince Harry face great risk? I suspect the general consensus you quote is correct - no senior officer would risk his career by putting Harry's safety at risk. I'd forgotten about Uncle Andrew's courage during the Falklands war though.

Sam - he's ghastly isn't he?

The point is that you can't risk the heir being captured. Killed is not a prob because there's a line of succession. But captured would be decidedly awkward.

Elizabeth II's father fought at Jutland, Andrew in the Falklands, Harry in Afghanistan. It's a habit.

dearieme - yes, captured would have been a problem. In another sense it's a problem now.

Come to think of it: naval officer and two helicopter pilots. So the likely outcomes are survival or death. Capture not terribly likely - so even for spares that may be a consideration.
