Civil servants affect every person in Britain, says striking union boss
Civil servants in the Public and Commerical Services (PCS) union are among the hundreds of thousands of people on strike today.
General secretary Mark Serwotka told Radio 4's World at One programme that every announcement in Jeremy Hunt's Budget would need a civil servant to help implement it.
"[Civil servants] affect every person in Britain, from cradle to death," he says.

"And anyhow, our members need to be on strike today, because who is going to look after our children during the teachers' strike?"
Silly sod can't even get a cliche right. "From cradle to grave", you twerp.
It's notable that he said "[Civil servants] affect every person in Britain, from cradle to death". He apparently couldn't bring himself to say "[Civil servants] benefit every person in Britain, from cradle to death".
Sam - it's an interesting coincidence isn't it?
dearieme - and "cradle to death" isn't even correct. There is more bureaucracy to follow.
Jannie - as if benefit isn't the aim at all, which it probably isn't.
I recall the days when the (un)civil service union was called the Civil and Public Services Association (CPSA). During my military tenure at the MoD, during a strike which led to us squaddies having to do their work as well as ours, I referred to their union as the PDSA (Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals) and challenged those complaining to tell me the difference. A formal complaint led to me being given a "punishment posting". How I hated those balmy Cyprus winters, the skiing in the Troodos mountains, and the summers on the beach. Those two years went by so quickly.

Penseivat - if I remember rightly, years ago the CPSA had a country house hotel somewhere in Yorkshire where members could stay at attractive rates. We were taken there once as guests and very pleasant it was too. I don't know how they have the gall to go on strike.
