What's so remarkable is their ignorance. They seem entirely unaware that lots of water in their engine compartment is likely to knock out the electrics that control the engine. And the way they blast at high speed through the ford betrays something of the way peoples' mindset has been shaped by present times.
It's not just the electrics: by far the biggest danger is water being sucked up the air intake. You might be lucky with a petrol engine, but even a drop in the combustion chamber of a high compression diesel will result in a cracked piston, bent conrod, or worse. The raised Land Rover didn't appear to have a high-level air intake, which suggests the driver is more of a poser than a serious Off-Roader...
The electronics are quite well protected. The end comes when the engine takes a big gulp of dihydrogen oxide and tries to compress it. It doesn't work and, afterwards, neither does the engine . . .
Great entertainment! I once drove a mini (old type) through a ford with only 9" water depth - it conked out in the middle of course. But to attempt nearly 3' depth shows ignorance and stupidity at a deeper level, ha ha

"Rufford Ford is in north Nottinghamshire."
I thought this post was going to be about some American celebrity visiting the East Midlands. An actor, a rapper, perhaps, or an evangelical preacher.

We had a ford near us in childhood. We tried to nag my father to drive through it whenever we could.
It had a small bridge beside it presumably for pedestrians and cyclists. (Those were the days when lots of men cycled to work.)
Tammly - it's as if their need to be spectacular is greater than their common sense.
microdave - and whatever their level of engine knowledge, they ought to realise that water sucked into the air intake can't be good.
Sam - it's a good name isn't it? "Pastor Rufford Ford is due to preach in north Notts."
Jannie - I bet local garages make a good living from it.
Ed - my wife's old Mini would conk out if she drove through a good sized puddle.
dearieme - there is a ford at Sidmouth in Devon. When we took the grandkids there one year, I had to drive through it a number of times.
