No crocodile and sausages

Here we are on our summer holiday by the seaside after a 4:30am start and an easy journey. As we know, it’s so sunny that the Met Office has issued an Extreme Heat Warning, yet the hordes on the beach seemed to be entirely unaware of the dangers. Most weren’t even wearing a coat or hat. Wait until the Met Office Enforcement officers arrive.

Moving on to other matters, the seaside reminds me of Punch and Judy shows and inevitably this reminds me of politics and attempts to choose a Prime Minister we didn’t vote for. That's the way to do it.

The whole political game seems to have evolved into a kind of weirdly implausible show where Punch and Judy pretend to fight over the next batch of regulations. No crocodile and sausages though. At least that would be entertaining.

Did you say you were on the South Coast, AKH? Where are you? Any chance of buying you a coffee if timetables work out? You've probably got my email, but it's simonjneale@yahoo.co.uk

I was thinking just this morning about how much I enjoyed Punch and Judy. Also donkey rides. And flying in aeroplanes around the Blackpool tower, and tram trips in Blackpool and Douglas. There was a clown in the Blackpool Tower Circus, Charlie Cairoli, who was actually funny.

My memory is poor but every now and then something pops up. I can even remember the names of two of my Primary School teachers, Miss Haddow - who was young and pretty - and Mr Carlisle, who was the Head. (Or was it Carlyle? Can't remember. Did I ever know?)

He did not have an Assistant Head. He taught a class during the school day and did his head-mastering after we'd all gone home. During teaching hours the school was run by his secretary and the janitor. Class sizes were mid-forties. And it all worked - we learned to read and write and reckon, we got our jabs from a visiting nurse, we learnt a bit about the world, and we were happy bunnies.

Of course we walked to school and back unaccompanied. It was a different world.

Sam - thanks, nice idea about coffee. We are in Sidmouth for two weeks and if I remember rightly that's a considerable distance from you, but drop me an email if it happens to fit in with something else you are doing. We sometimes holiday in Swanage if that's better although we won't be there this year, but if that's more practical and we do book something in the future, I can drop you an email.

dearieme - my memory is poor too, but I remember teachers who made an impression. Mr Morris in junior school who brought in a throat mike from the war to show us how it worked. He made an electromagnet while we watched as he would the coils and taught us things which I'm sure were not in any syllabus. In earlier years there was Miss Springett who taught us that we could actually want our reading to improve.

Ah, Sidmouth is indeed a bit out of current range. Some other time would be appreciated, though.

Sam - and if you ever venture north on or near to the M1 in Derbyshire then drop me an email and we'll arrange something. Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire are possibilities too.
