Maybe we need a vaccine for timidity

Britain has a new Brexit divide with Leave voters more willing than Remainers to ditch their masks when the laws demanding their use are scrapped.

More Brexiteers said they planned to stop wearing a face covering after July 19 than said they would continue to voluntarily cover up, by 46 to 41 per cent, YouGov found.

By contrast, some 59 per cent of Remainers said they planned to continue to wear masks to lower the risk that they would spread disease to others.

I wonder if even YouGuv believe their own polls.

The remainers are probably waiting for that European directive to stop wearing masks.

I believe that many people voted Leave because 'Take Back Control' was more important to them than 'Ever Closer Union'.

So being prepared to 'take back control' by choosing not to wear a mask (for most of the time, at least) seems in keeping with the survey findings.

I have wondered if masks had been made in the image of V for Vendetta the government and the opposition (ha!) would have been so keen on them. I guess we will never know.

Anon - I'm no pollster, but I assume they must have their doubts.

Sam - or a Guardian story about discarded masks in landfill causing climate-wrecking emissions.

DJ - I'm sure there is something in that. The coronavirus mess has suggested quite strongly that many people do not want much political control over their own lives.

@AKH 1907: Indeed.

My subtly different take is that this whole farrago has made some people (not many) realise what political control of their lives would actually mean. If even a few more wake up, there's hope.

Peter - if it interferes with holidays, travel and normal life generally then more could wake up. We've all been affected directly and we all have stories to tell.
