Cool at last

We tootled off into Matlock for a stroll and a coffee this morning. The heatwave finally seems to have abated so we can get a few jobs done around the house without wilting in the heat. Not that it has been unpleasant for us. Sitting in the garden under the shade of the Amelanchier wasn't at all arduous.

Thanks to all the loft insulation, it has been very warm upstairs in the bedrooms and hardly cooled at all during the night. So much so that we decided to sleep on the floor downstairs which was a few degrees cooler and we could open the patio doors.

Surprisingly enjoyable it was too, sleeping on the floor on a few folded duvets. It brought back quite vivid memories of the flat in Coventry which Mrs H shared with a friend during her college days. We slept as well as we do in the bedroom, although getting up in the morning wasn't quite as easy as in those far off Coventry days.

Amelanchier, you say?

A fine little tree. The flowers don't last very long, but they are very pretty and delicate. And the whole thing is quite open and airy, so I guess you might have been in dappled shade.

Come the hot weather I open the loft hatch slightly to allow the hot air to escape. I've also installed a ceiling fan/light to move the air around in the bedroom. It seems to work. I've not used one of those portable air-con units as the power and exhaust requirements would be difficult and inefficient. However a small 'proper' permanent installation could be possible... for next year.

In many places we build our homes upside down.
Bedrooms should be downstairs, which is naturally cooler and who cares about the view, and living room upstairs where the heat rises to and the view is often better.

Just to let you know that I will be away and unable to comment for 10 days.

I thought I would let you know so you didn't think my attempts to invent a domestic hydrogen boiler had ended badly...

If I come down to sleep on the floor, the dog comes up and wants to join in...

Luckily, the heavens have just opened, so I'm glad I mowed yesterday!

Ha ha ha, Sam! Have a good break!

Sam - yes the shade is dappled which we prefer to dense shade under the other trees even on hot sunny days.

DJ - we can't open our loft hatch slightly, it has to be fully open or closed. Opening upstairs windows only has a small effect but sleeping downstairs seems to work well for us.

Doonhamer - good point. One of my aunts converted an upstairs bedroom to her living room and I always thought it worked well. Not much of a view, but better than downstairs.

Sam - thanks for letting me know, I would have been concerned about the hydrogen boiler project, scouring the news for stories about an involuntary space trip. Have a relaxing break.

Scrobs - I mowed the lawn just in time too. Always satisfying.
