Passing through woodland yesterday, we came across this tree which had been struck by lightning during recent thunderstorms. Not an uncommon sight, but all that freshly smashed wood was a reminder of how powerful a lightning strike can be. It was smashed as if struck from above by a single clumsy blow from a gigantic axe.

We actually went to see the results of a witnessed lightning strike, which was posted on Facebook and collected quite a crowd. The wood (willow) was shredded into long thin strips like belts. I took one, but when it dried out it turned into a boring splintery stick.
Sam - there were splintery sticks scattered around this tree, one of them pretty big. It gave a feel for the force needed to blast it out of the the main trunk.
