The ratchet clicks again

Zellweger, DiCaprio, Beyonce among stars given VIP status under new UK points-based immigration system

Those who meet the criteria will be able to live and work in the UK more easily under reforms being introduced by the Home Office...

Those who will qualify are winners of Nobel Prizes, the Turing Award, Oscars and Golden Globes, who will be able to live and work in the UK more easily under reforms being introduced by the Home Office.

Individuals who have won prestigious awards from across the sciences, humanities, engineering, the arts and digital technology will be able to take advantage of changes to the Global Talent visa route.

The ratchet clicks again. Maybe ZiL lanes are coming back too.

Perhaps not the shorter ratchet clicking but the longer term wheel turning? In Roman times it was Bread and Circuses to placate the mob. Now it's Brains and Celebrities.

There are some very clever and productive scientists in other countries that I would welcome in Britain to boost our 'white heat of technology'. People with attractive faces or big... not so much.

Presumably only the rich will be able to afford tickets for the hydrogen-powered airliners which will be invented by the eminent scientists.

As long as they pay tax here, they can do what they like, I won't be interested in what they do anyway!

Beyonce and "the arts" that's stretching it a bit...

DJ - I'd welcome some of those very clever and productive scientists too, plus plenty of engineers who know how to build proper power stations.

Sam - something like that, although senior climate bureaucrats are likely to be included too. And BBC "journalists".

Scrobs - it's a sound approach. They have nothing too say to us.

MrMC - I agree. From what little I've seen it's a huge stretch.
