Tories cannot win elections with Badenoch or Jenrick, warns Britain’s top pollster John Curtice
Britain’s top pollster has warned that the Conservatives cannot win whether Robert Jenrick or Kemi Badenoch ends up winning the Tory leadership contest.
Professor Sir John Curtice described the pair, battling it out in the last stage of the race to succeed Rishi Sunak, as “unknown quantities” who do not have what it takes to turn the party’s fortunes around.
We appear to have made a decisive move from political parties aiming to win elections to a strategy of presenting themselves as the least horrible option.
At the moment, the door appears to be open to any leader capable of competing with Keir Starmer in the politics of least horrible option. It's not a high bar.

Some commentators have been saying for years that the Conservative Party is doomed. It will take a few years, though, because political loyalties are hard to shift, and it will probably be due to an inability to recruit new members as the lifelong true-blues die off. At the moment they want to square up to Labour, but the Lib Dems are desperate to become the serious party of opposition. And they will also have to direct their fire towards the right, where their deserters are rallying around Farage. I think Jenrick is talking sense, but too little, too late.
Sam - it shouldn't be so, but the Conservative Party may be doomed partly because of the name. The political term "conservative" has been vilified for decades and propaganda does work. Even a highly charismatic leader may not be able to undo that, even when leading a party which has moved firmly leftwards.
The Lib Dems could become the serious party of opposition, it doesn't necessarily matter how useless they are. Yet there are hints that many people are tired of political mendacity too. Interesting times unfortunately.

I would take what the 'blessed' Prof John Curtice says with a pinch of salt. He is controlled by Strathclyde University is he not? Not long ago he did an interview on Talk Radio with Julia Hartley-Brewer and listed the 6 top concerns that the electorate had in the run up to the election. Mass immigration was not mentioned by him in those top 6, this despite it being a principal topic of concern with the listeners of Talk Radio and the country. And Julia H-B didn't even notice the omission! Controlled, you see, by what your political masters will accept as proper topics and opinions.
Tammly - I agree, he wanders into the role of media pundit without appearing to notice the difference. If he doesn't see mass immigration as a major political issue then he isn't too hot on polling or punditry.
