China is probing the US defences by seeing how it will respond to obvious blatant infringements. Knowing the technical capabilities is important, and also how the main political and military actors will perform, and how the general public will react to being overflown.

Sam - thanks for the link, it's worth looking at two very different perspectives. I don't know much about Peter Zeihan, but I believe he has a much more negative view of Chinese capabilities that the chap in your link.
