Bill's Beach House

I suppose tectonic plate movements might mean that some shorelines are lifting up above the sea while others try to dive beneath it. But the bit I have longest experience of is Hastings, just along the South Coast from us.

Being relatively poor, and my parents being creatures of habit, throughout the 1960s we always went on summer holiday to the same place. Same boarding house, same activities, every year. So I played games at the shoreline, made up imaginary kingdoms, dug with a bucket and spade. I got to know how high the tide came up, and what features it covered.

Now, revisiting sixty years later, guess what I find regarding sea levels? No, actually, there's no need to guess, is there?

It must be even more obvious to people who actually live all their lives on the coast. Why do the purveyors of this nonsense think they can get away with it?

I remarked somewhere that Obama's seaside estate on Martha's Vineyard implied that he knew that catastrophic sea level rise was baloney. A helpful commenter then directed me to his new seaside mansion under construction in Hawaii. You might argue that it's win-win: any harm from flooding will be largely covered by "insurance" paid for by the federal taxpayer.

Aaaah Hastings Sam - born there, swam in the sea or the White Rock baths there, went to school there, did most of my formative drinking in The Pump House, The Castle Bar or the rugby club there, lived there with Senora O'Blene, both girls were born in The Buchanan, got several huge construction jobs there, and the list goes on...

I never worried about sea-levels, which is another arm of the globule worming scam currently peddled by loopies who are hell-bent on getting fickle government cash for doing bugger all!

(I hope you never went to The Witch Doctor Club - my dad banned from that den of iniquity)!

I was brought up in the Chilterns and we were constantly worried in the 1960s about the level of the water table. It was 500 feet below our garden and sinking all the time! (Due to too much abstraction). We were advised by a local 'water scientist' that water rationing was inevitable. Tankers would have to make weekly deliveries to the villages. I sold the family house last year, water was still gushing out of the taps when turned on.

Sam - interesting - I suppose the nonsense purveyors are mostly talking to people without that level of personal experience. A more genuine problem seems to be erosion rather than sea level, but erosion problems have generally been familiar coastal problems for centuries.

The opposite case where the sea has retreated and former coastal features are now well inland, that just isn't part of the narrative for some reason.

dearieme - I think you are right, Obama knew catastrophic sea level rise was baloney. He is probably a good judge of people and saw the climate doom peddlers as a political convenience and nothing else.

Scrobs - do you ever go back? In my experience it's not a good idea to revisit old haunts.

Tammly - it would be no surprise if that water scientist drew a graph from dodgy historical data and extrapolated it with a ruler. Today he would use a computer and be just as wrong.

glacial isostatic adjustment

Yes, the sea level is changing, nothing we can do about it.

djc - and it's extraordinary that we have entered a situation where pretending to do something about it is politically fashionable.
