Extremely Normal

Double misery for weather-weary Brits: Scorching heat turns to torrential downpours and thunderstorms in Scotland bringing 'risk to life and businesses' with flooding - but extreme rain still won't be enough to recover from driest July on record

Presumably this headline is telling us that old-fashioned torrential downpours have been upgraded to "extreme rain" by official weather upgraders. Still doesn't sound quite right though - there are so many extremes that extreme situations are becoming the normal state of affairs.

Extremely normal I'd say.

Rename them the MHO? Meteorological Hyperbole Office?

Very much so!

Exceedingly so!

It's all reminiscent of the warm-up act for a kid's party, where manic hysteria sets in and excitement dribbles from their cake-strewn mouths...

I bet the weathermen sit and fidget on the edge of their chairs with one leg tucked under the other!

Music festival on Saturday, blazing sun and 35 degrees in the afternoon was simply too hot for me, although the evening was wonderful. Today 24 degrees and some soft cool sprinkles of light rain, it feels so lovely to stand outside and get damp.

So not for all Brits. We're still experiencing single misery. And if I want to get technical about it, even the Scots have only had two consecutive single miseries.

James - Extreme Hyperbole?

Scrobs - "I bet the weathermen sit and fidget on the edge of their chairs with one leg tucked under the other!"

Ha ha - spot on.

Woodsy - that's about what we had - 24 degrees and some soft cool sprinkles of light rain. Not many sprinkles and not enough to get particularly wet if walking through in it.

Sam - maybe they both count as double miseries because of Nicola Sturgeon.

All these announcements are made by following the new 'Worry the Public' playbook. Covid control techniques worked so well to subdue everyone - the same formulae are being repeated.

No weather event can be part of natural variations, all events are 'worst ever' (by excluding any historical records which show they're not).

If the natural world doesn't come up with a new pseudo-disaster soon, some scares we've not had recently could be resurrected, such as 'Acid Rain'.

Ed - I wouldn't be at all surprised if acid rain makes a comeback. It will probably be linked to the energy crisis and the need to burn more coal.
