Temporary Traffic Lights

Yesterday a set of traffic lights failed on our school run route. Our friendly bus driver says it didn't make much difference to the traffic flow, drivers coped well with having no traffic lights.

Something I've seen before when commuting through Nottingham. Lights or no lights - didn't seem to make a dramatic difference to traffic flow.

Then a set of temporary traffic lights were installed and things changed quite dramatically. It took us 40 minutes to complete a 4 mile journey. Maybe get rid of the lights and save energy is the lesson. Or get rid of the bureaucrats. Or both.

When I lived in Edinburgh - large city- it was obvious when the traffic lights failed because traffic flowed really well. When I moved to Grimsby in 1979 - medium sized town - I noticed that the slightest problem caused chaos. Answers on a five pound note, please . . .

Jannie - maybe city commuters know when to give way, when to nip into a gap and it just works.

It's worst of all if traffic lights fail and policemen appear, directing the traffic manually. Then you're guaranteed ginormous queues.

Happily they don't seem to do that any more, I expect all the policemen are too busy checking pronouns on Twitter.

Peter - I've noticed that too, but I suppose checking Twitter pronouns is much more comfortable than directing traffic.
