Zero-carbon football

Sky and Tottenham partner for world's first major net zero carbon football game against Chelsea

#GameZero will demonstrate the green steps that the sporting world can take to work towards a zero-carbon future; #GameZero partners want the game to raise awareness of the threat of climate change and inspire fans to make simple changes that will help reduce their carbon footprint

Lots of exciting, forward-looking, responsible green possibilities here. Fortunately we already have a picture of a net zero football pitch in winter.

One football game is hardly difficult, is it? All you have to do is to spend billions on land, a stadium and support facilities, transport, marketing, merchandising, advertising, etc., and then make sure you don't rack up too much of an electricity bill during the actual ninety minutes.

As a long suffering Tottenham supporter I can see the headlines now Tottenham net zero Chelsea 5.

Will they have valet parking for the super star players' bikes?
WAGs? No I meant push or pedal bicycles.

So each team is going to field only 'local' players to avoid air transport of international players? Use only locally made clothing and boots? And play only during the day to avoid using floodlights? Presumably the away team will travel by canal using a horse drawn canal barge?

Or did Tottenham and Chelsea just jump on a passing green bandwagon?

Not sure if this is relevant, but I heard that the only way for Arsenal to be seen at the top of the table, was to turn your newspaper upside down!

I hope all their expensive sponsored kit is vegan too, just to make sure...

It's back to hand sewn leather footballs then?

Spuds shouldn't find it difficult to go carbon neutral. I remember a school science experiment when we lit a light bulb using a potato.

I've just noticed that my electricity supplier now guarantees 100% renewable sources. I'm sure that's going to work on those freezing dead calm winter days when everyone and their cousin has heating on at full blast.

Sam - and no TV of course, and no working toilets...

Wiggia - could be even more goals on either side if the players have to cycle to the ground and some don't make it.

Doonhamer - would there be any point being a WAG in a net zero world?

DJ - it's a bandwagon of course, the more it is examined the sillier it becomes. It doesn't even make sense in practical terms.

Scrobs - good point - no synthetics allowed in the kit. Furs could be a zero carbon option.

Woodsy - as long as the leather is made from animals killed in a zero carbon manner such as flint spears.

Andy - our electricity supplier now guarantees 100% renewable sources too. I hope it isn't actually true.
