Nauseating hypocrites

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle seen as 'nauseating hypocrites' at Global Citizen Live

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have thrilled the crowd during their speech at the Global Citizen Live concert in New York over the weekend. But not royal biographer Angela Levin, who said their appearance appalled her.

The author of "Harry: A Biography of a Prince" criticised the couple's appearance on stage and likened them to cheerleaders. Especially the Duke of Sussex, who was seen cupping a hand to his ear as he waited to hear the cheers from the crowd...

She said the 37-year old acted "like a cheerleader, or master of ceremonies, whipping up the crowd with shouts of 'Come on, we want this! and the crowd yelling 'Yeah!' and Meghan chipping in with, 'It's got to happen.'"

Levin pointed out that the couple can hardly be considered experts about COVID-19 or climate change. She called them "vacuous and superficial" and attacked them for their use of private jets despite their lectures on sustainability.

Yes they are hypocrites, but it is also a situation requiring more than condemnation. Presumably a cheering audience doesn't see them as the charlatans they so clearly are.

Individual audience members may be aware of the hypocrisy but possibly they don't care because their message is up there on stage and to them that matters more than hypocrisy. Like football supporters they cheer their side even if the star player is a hypocritical creep.

"Presumably a cheering audience doesn't see them as the charlatans they so clearly are."

I rather expect that a lot of the cheering audience are only too well aware of their own failings and don't care to draw attention to the hypocrisy in case there's blow-back.

I agree with DiscoveredJoys; in a similar vein, the owner of the Glastonbury festival site was quoted today denying that those attending were responsible for high levels of cocaine and MDMA in the rivers at the site.

‘[the festivalgoers] don’t urinate in the river...and they don’t pee on the grass either. The people who come to the festival are so environmentally concerned. They are incredibly good people, so conscientious.’

These would, presumably, be the same environmentally concerned ‘good people’ who leave a sea of litter behind every year..

DJ and Macheath - I'm never sure where we should go with this kind of thing. Do we simply go by the behaviour we see or do we assume hidden mental processes we cannot see?

Playing to a studio audience is not a reflection of public will. The studio audience will have been told when and where to cheer by the warm up guys. Sometimes taking several takes to get the desired effect.

And that's without sound effects added to the original soundtrack.....

Some luvvie in a chair - who can tell? But often they are there because they have made the list by their earlier utterances and political punditry. Consider Ricky Gervais at the 2020 Golden Globes (it's on YouTube):

"Ricky Gervais tells Hollywood celebrities to skip the political lecture: "you know nothing about the real world." He then instructs them to "come up here, take your award, thank your agent and your God, then get the f*#@ off the stage." And that was just the beginning of an epic take-down of these hypocrites at the 2020 Golden Globe awards.

Bill - I hope Harry knows the difference.

DJ - I read about the Ricky Gervais treatment but didn't watch the video. I wonder if it did him any harm professionally.
