Nearly there

Another dull and chilly day here in Derbyshire. I'm determined to avoid switching on the central heating in August so we only have today and tomorrow to go.

A few extra clothing layers should help us get there, but it does make a chap wonder who messed up the global warming system. Joe Biden is my guess.

A question for you, AKH.

Recently a nice middle class lady told me that garden bonfires were ecologically unsound because they released CO2 into the atmosphere. But I read that a sizeable chunk of the CO2 in the atmosphere comes from vegetable decomposition. So wouldn't composting garden waste or leaving it to rot eventually put as much CO2 into the air? The plants just take it from the air, presumably, so it just returns at different rates according to what happens to it?

I also need to leave a comment of course!

Currently we can't switch on the central heating as we're waiting for a new boiler. I've gone for a hydrogen one. The man said we might have to wait thirty years.

Sam - yes you are right, decaying vegetable matter releases vast amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. Allowing it to decompose rather than burning it is slower but that's all.

However, burning it is a quicker way to recycle the CO2 back into plant food and by implication a quicker way to recycle it back into the food eaten by a nice middle aged lady.

Sam - waiting thirty years for your hydrogen boiler is probably a sound move. It allows other people to sort out any problems with fires and explosions.

Waiting thirty years for a hydrogen boiler is probably sensible as it will take that long to save up for a years supply of the stuff.

I think there's going to be a boom in hydrogen boilers.

Wiggia - and something better may come along such as wood.

Sackers - they could certainly take off in a spectacular way.

Beautiful logic:

"I'm determined to avoid switching on the central heating in August so we only have today and tomorrow to go."

James - more a case of not wishing to become nesh.
