Guess which one

Climate change: Global greenhouse gas levels were highest ever in 2020 despite lockdowns, study finds

Lockdowns in the COVID-19 pandemic did little to curtail greenhouse gas build-ups and Europe still sweltered in its hottest-ever year, a global review has found.

In which case there are two possibilities here in the UK.
  1. There is no point trying to reduce CO2 emissions because it makes no difference and will cause far too much damage.
  2. Policies aimed at reducing CO2 emissions will have to be far more draconian than the coronavirus response.
Suppose we take a wild guess at the one Prime Minister Nut Nut favours.

Apparently the internet causes a lot of harmful emissions. Probably too much to allow people to use it without some government regulation...

I went on a holiday weekend to Ludlow recently and in the Saturday bustle of the market square were a handful of Extinction Rebellion protesters. One woman held up a banner saying "I'm really worried about climate change".
" I'm really worried about intellectual change", I thought. Later I espied a notice they had stuck into a planter outside the local Conservative party office which said 'Warning! Dangerous Climate Change'. As my partner and her sister were in the shop opposite choosing outfits I prepared to cross the street, turn the sign round and write 'Scientifically illiterate message on other side'. At that moment they appeared en mass - rats!

Oh dear, the usual (deliberate?) confusion of climate and weather.

"It's so hot, so it must be climate change." A quick look at weather records will show just as many past hot summers, but where's the scare story in that?

Then, of course, there's the built-in assumption that CO2 in minuscule quantities is the major driver of world temperatures (spoiler: it's not).

There is no need to guess, the answer is obvious. We have a government which is incapable of doing nothing, they feel obliged to always be doing something. So expect more restrictive measures, as they will not work there will be an eternal doubling down.

Sam - imagine it being regulated by BBC types, as it is bound to be.

Tammly - yet that woman probably isn't really worried about climate change at all. Weird people doing weird things.

Ed - yet they don't confuse climate and weather whenever there are unusual cold temperatures, severe frosts or uncommonly heavy snowfalls.

Andy - I'm sure you are right. The mess will have to be very obviously messy before a change of political direction is contemplated.
