Plan for Change II

Andy Burnham tells Scots he offers 'change' from 'broken' Westminster politics

Labour’s Andy Burnham has said he will bring “change” to Scotland as he told people north of the border that Westminster is “broken”.

Presumably this is changed change, a complete change from the other change Keir Starmer promised.

At the moment and whatever the rhetoric, it may be worth assuming that parachuting Burnham into this rather odd political situation was merely a way to remove Starmer while other potential challengers keep their powder dry.

If so, then Labour MPs don't necessarily expect Burnham to have much chance of steering their party towards a worthwhile political position for the next General Election. Get rid of him once his approval rating falls through the floor seems more likely. A third time lucky approach perhaps.

Either way, let us hope we make it to the next General Election.

But the 'Blob' doesn't like any change that makes them feel uncomfortable or doesn't increase their grasp on the levers of power.

So to Sir Humphrey moving Government functions up North will be resisted. Very politely, of course.

DJ - yes it will be resisted, every nit-picking step of the way. It's a crazy idea even if not entirely serious, because it lands him in procedural treacle from the beginning.

Manchester is only in "the north" because the border with Scotland is angled. The land of Oasis is more or less on the same latitude as Birmingham. The real North is on the proper side of the Pennines, unfortunately, that's an area that has been subjected to lack of investment by numpties in successive governments for years. When I grew up in County Durham (renamed Cleveland, and then Teesside), there were steel and chemical works, shipbuilding, timber imports, and coal mining. All gone. I can recall the newspaper article years ago, which referred to.a man getting the single job advertised in the employment office. There is little doubt in my mind that Burnham will continue to believe that civilisation ends on the eastern slopes of the Pennines.

dearieme - that's a lot of motorhomes though.

Penseivat - by "the north" he seems to mean north of Watford Gap. Even Derbyshire seems to be part of his "north". He doesn't seem to have any understanding of investment beyond government spending and subsidies, or the need to create economic situations where genuine investment is worthwhile.
