New proposals to cut bills with community batteries
- Families and businesses could benefit from cheaper energy through the use of community batteries.Families could save on bills by storing cheaper renewable able electricity and using it when demand is highest
- Call for evidence launched to explore how community batteries can be rolled out at to support working people, including renters or those living in flats, to save money
- Part of the biggest investment in community energy in UK history, giving people a stake in local clean power projects and reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuels

On the bright side (ha!) local community batteries would provide a useful set of 'other people' to blame for central government failures.
Makes me think of our local fire station. It was renamed "Community Fire Station" presumably so we wouldn't know whether it belonged to the City or the County. Either that or someone in the construction trade did well out of a backhander. Though I suppose both could be true.
DJ - that's a thought, cowboy installers shoving in unbranded batteries could be a hot source of distraction headlines for years.
dearieme - made me wonder if "Community Fire Station" suggests there are such things as "community fires" which everyone gathers round in winter singing community songs. Backhanders are more likely though.
Yahoo! As always, someone has a germ of an idea which is then thrown to the ever ready legion of hooks, crooks and comic singers. They can then suck the budget dry with consultations, meetings, projections and all the usual wastes of time and, above all, money.
The best use of solar panels I have seen are the panels on the roof of the village school in the village I used to live in. The roof faced due south and was at a good angle to capture the best of the sun.The school enjoyed free electricity during school hours and could sell on any surplus to the grid when the school was not occupied. Whether the school made any money I have no idea. The Fire Station at my new home is a true community effort as all the Firefighters are volunteers and handle anything needed at any time. day or night.
Jannie - if it gets off the ground it's bound to go like that too, turning into another money pit for the next government to bury in the accounts.
John - presumably the school had to top up the electricity with its grid connection during winter and dull days unless it is particularly energy efficient. It's never easy to get to grips with the value of small projects like that in the UK as we have such variable levels of sunlight.
