The Gruesome Twosome

Miliband and Jørgensen: Clean energy is Europe’s only route to security and prosperity

Ed Miliband is the U.K. energy secretary and Dan Jørgensen is the EU commissioner for energy.

The world has entered an era of greater uncertainty and instability than at any other point in either of our lifetimes, and energy is now central to this volatile age we find ourselves in.

In recent years, both Britain and Europe have paid a heavy price for our exposure to the roller coaster of international fossil fuel markets. Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine in 2022 sent global gas prices soaring — driving up bills for families and businesses across the continent and leading to the worst cost-of-living crisis our countries have faced in a generation.

This is one of the problems with Keir Starmer's shaky grip on No. 10, Ed Miliband could replace him and his grip on reality is even shakier.

Miliband's grip on reality is (net) zero.

To many politicians, reality is what they say it is (until they are rejected).

If Ed Miliband was to be offered the Prime Ministership *only if he rejected Net Zero* what would his reaction tell us? If he abandoned Net Zero he would be labelled (by some) as a political chancer. If he stayed true to Net Zero he would be labelled (by some) as deluded.

decnine - yes, he's mad.

DJ - that would be an interesting test. I suspect he'd abandon Net Zero but fudge his decision in some way once in No. 10.

I have always wondered why, either Ed Minibrain shows reporters around his house, pointing out where the Agas in his numerous kitchens have been replaced by heat pumps or, a reporter asks him if heat pumps have replaced the previous source of heating. The

Global gas prices did not soar.. For Europe, all, it was the cunning plan of destroying gas pipes supplying cheap gas from Russia leaving, for UK, the only other source the expensive to buy, ship and handle gas from our trusty ally, the US of A. Together with a greater quantity that Norway extracts from that huge sub-North Sea reservoir that they share with the UK. For some reason it is evil if we extract this same gas and "windfall" taxes ensure that it is not profitable for companies at our end of this reservoir to extract. Ah scratch ma heid.
Now we are at the mercy soaring price of silver affecting the price of windmills and solar panels that we buy from China, who strangely enough produce these planet saving wonders using oodles of evil coal.

And another thing. Why did the 'uge pharmacy companies escape windfall taxes on all the moolah shovelled into their tax haven accounts by grateful governments for supplying endlessly repeating "safe and effective" armfulls' of juju juice?

Penseivat - or ask if he only uses electricity when the sun is shining or there is enough wind to run the national grid.

Doonhamer - it's mildly worrying that Mad Ed and others still use the global gas price drivel as a way to chop off any debate about the absurd futility of Net Zero. It justifies extreme cynicism about motives, which shouldn't be the case in a supposedly civilised country, but it is the case.
