Cop29 signs off $300bn climate deal after poorer nations stage walk-out
Cop29 ground out a last-minute compromise deal on Saturday night that offers at least $300 billion (£240 billion) per year by 2035 to help poorer countries confront global warming and allows China’s contributions to remain voluntary.
The sum demanded by the less wealthy nations had been much more following two weeks of negotiations in Azerbaijan’s Caspian Sea capital of Baku.
What are the greatest powers among men on this earth? Some will say the pen, or the sword, or love, or what not. Men of the world will say, money and lies; and they will be very nearly right.

"poorer nations stage walk-out"
Oh, Dear!!
Any leader worthy of the name would have taken that as an opportunity to pack away his notes, and tell those top civil servants and advisers accompanying him to take a few days soaking up the sun and recharging their batteries before the return to London.
And then reflected on the way home: "Maybe if these guys are so ungrateful and so unprofessional as to flounce off, we ought to stop paying their farmers anyway. And also we need to work out a plan to stop their countrymen coming to the UK. And if people walk away from negotiations where you are giving away the taxpayer's money, maybe we could adopt similar tactics with the rail unions and the doctors, and see them walk away as well..."
Flagwavers from countries with lots of taxpayers who weren't consulted pledge said taxpayers' taxes to countries they look down on. They contribute to the warble gloaming with their first class travel arrangements and unnecessary five star B & Bs while posing for lots of "look at us, we're the good guys" publicity. Meanwhile the ungrateful poor people walk out, saying "t'ain't enough". I thought cargo cults were a thing of the past but apparently there are still beiievers . . .
Sam - yes, any leader worthy of the name would do just that. Walk away and never go back. Anything else is too weak. To carry on pretending is weak.
Jannie - it doesn't seem to be any deeper than "look at us, we're the good guys" publicity. As if none of them believe any of it, but go through the performance because it is is a performance and nothing else.
