Long-haul

King to miss Cop29 climate summit in Azerbaijan

Charles has long campaigned on environmental issues but will be absent from the United Nations gathering being held in the oil-rich state from November 11 to 22.

The head of state has been receiving treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer since early in the year and the global climate change conference will begin just over two weeks after the King and Queen Camilla’s long-haul trip to Australia and Samoa ends.

Is the point about hypocrisy worth making? That long-haul trip to Australia and Samoa? Just before COP29?

Oh well, yet another piece of evidence that elites aren't expected to do the Net Zero stuff, but we certainly are.

Och, we'll be told some rubbish about using green fuel or buying carbon indulgences or whatever. And it will all be mendacious.

Without knowing his past history, this would actually be a good choice. The King should indeed visit Australia; that's his job. The flight makes a negligible difference to the climate, even if any human activity does. But he should be avoiding the COP nonsense.

I wonder what Miliband will do, though. I reckon he will fly out there for a bit of showboating. There aren't many western politicians who have done as much to destroy their country's industrial base and domestic energy security, so he will be something of a star.

dearieme - maybe we need a green airline for important people - it could be called Mendacious Air. Not mendacious hair of course, that's a wig.

Sam - and if he were to avoid the COP nonsense he could fly with a clear conscience. Miliband is bound to be there, showboating for all he's worth which isn't very much. Let us hope someone offers him a job.

I wouldn't mind so much if it was just him and his bird flying by Ryanair, but there will be an army of hangers on in first class luxury
(Of course what Sam says is true, and if he gave up the Green nonsense, then it wouldn't matter)

Bucko - yes it will be quite a party. I wonder if there will be military escort aircraft too.
