Bloater paste sounds tasty but a visit to Sainsbury's this afternoon suggests it could be a taste of the past. A pity, it sounds like something I'd enjoy, spread on a slice of toast. If bloater paste is now unobtainable, you could try Patum Peperium- The Gentleman's Relish, anchovies rather then herring.
( Always wondered if our taste for these things is related to the Roman Garnish of Garum?)
Small tins of kidneys in gravy were useful if you were making Steak and Kidney Pudding, but they vanished off the supermarket shelves after CJD.

Nessimmersion - thanks for the reminder, I was once given a pot of Patum Peperium and enjoyed it. I'll look out for it because Sainsbury's sell it - I've just checked. I once watched a video about preparing a modern version of Garum but it didn't turn out well.
DJ - it's a very long time since I sampled steak and kidney pudding, probably because nobody in the family made it. We always had steak and kidney pie.
Sam - it's the "Edwardian Suburbia" range for me, with porter rather than brown ale, although the last rabbit pie I had wasn't particularly good.
I've never heard of it, but there's no excuse for fish paste. Nasty stuff
I can recommend Sainsbury's trout pâté.
Bucko - smoked versions can be delicious on toast.
dearieme - thanks for the reminder - we tried that a few weeks ago when looking for smoked salmon. I know we decided to buy it again some time, although as usual with 'finds' we've forgotten.
