Rachel Reeves promises ‘iron discipline’ in Labour conference speech as Mark Carney weighs in for shadow chancellor
Rachel Reeves declared Labour “ready to serve, lead and rebuild Britain” on Monday as she unveiled her vision for the nation with her party feeling power tantalising within its grasp.
The shadow chancellor promised “iron discipline” to restore Britain’s “dire” public finances and won a resounding endorsement from former Bank of England governor Mark Carney who said it was “beyond time we put her energy and ideas into action”.
The presence of Mark Carney isn't encouraging, or maybe he is even more discouraging. He's certainly no friend of ordinary folk, but neither is the Labour party - hasn't been that for a very long time.

Apparently, none of the Labour elite will comment on why a Palestine desk, (supporting Hamas) was allowed at their conference but a request was denied to a Jewish request. Corbyn may be, technically, on the outside, but his alleged anti Semitism still lingers in the Labour party.
Penseivat
Penseivat - and Hamas is supposedly a proscribed terrorist organisation. I agree, the spirit of Corbyn still lingers in the Labour party. An enduringly unpleasant bunch.
If Labour fail, Carney will blame Brexit.
Unpleasant bunch indeed … maybe requiring ankle tags … there is precedent for Labour.
Sam - yes he almost certainly will. Nothing to do with spotting wrong 'uns.
James - the collapse of their party would suit me.
Labour's never was the friend of ordinary folk: it was the friend of closed-shop trade unions and a friend to the policy of buying votes with subsidised housing.
"Ready to serve, lead and rebuild Britain". That's what I'm afraid of.
dearieme - my father experienced one of those closed-shop trade unions in the printing trade. Managers couldn't even go onto the shop floor without negotiation.
Tammly - me too, it's chilling.
