Breakthrough nuclear fusion experiment could 'revolutionise the world' with clean energy

The experiment involved 192 high-powered laser beams being fired at a capsule containing the elements deuterium and tritium, heating it to a temperature of more than three million degrees centigrade - thus briefly simulating the conditions of a star.

Laser fusion test results raise energy hopes

An article in Science showed the plasma is far less of a problem than expected.

The report is based on the first experiments from the National Ignition Facility (Nif) in the US that used all 192 of its laser beams.

Along the way, the experiments smashed the record for the highest energy from a laser - by a factor of 20.

3 million degrees centigrade sounds quite hot. That's the sort of thing needed in those cold back bedrooms in the Five Towns that Arnold Bennett wrote about. When will the small versions be on Amazon, do you reckon?

It's only forty years away now! As it always has been.

Anyway it seems the claims are not readily distinguishable from lies.

Fusion. It will take 30 years to fulfillment.

It always has (I can remember from the 1960s): it always will, but it will never get there.

Sam - I imagine a domestic version will soon be found on eBay. The instructions may be rather vague though.

dearieme - I agree, the claims are not readily distinguishable from lies. I don't expect to see anything from it before I go and I wouldn't encourage my grandkids to bet on it either.

DAD - strange how it's about the right length of time for a career. Rather like climate predictions.
