An unholy tacit compact

They began by accusing one another in round terms, but each found himself so vulnerable that by an unholy tacit compact they agreed to exonerate one another.

Anthony Hope - A Change of Air (1890)

It's a problem with habitual mendacity in party politics. Once integrity has gone, constructive debate goes with it.

'Cursed Harmer' has never looked competent - just another bloody lawyer reading a script (and not able to 'think on his feet' when a quick response is needed, so looks like an automaton).
The Jellyfish is as devious as ever, never a direct answer from him when a little Latin or Greek can divert attention. And now he's been 'greened' by Princess Nut Nut, so has abandoned all pretence at Conservative policies.
It would appear that the age of statesmen is completely over - all we have now are career politicians, all trained to obfuscate & lie, whilst lining their own pockets at the expense of us poor taxpayers.

A lot of debate has to be destructive because politicians have to maintain the narrative that no matter how bad things are, they would have been even worse under the other guy. We can now see how ordinary, perplexed, and incompetent politicians are, thanks to electronic recording and the internet. So expect the vituperation and lying to get worse as their folly is exposed.

I suppose the next GE will be under some sort of electronic scrutiny, after the cheating in the US. The software is being developed as we speak!

But by then, I probably won't give a monkey's anyway...

Ed - somewhere there is a video of Starmer's attempts at Parliamentary jokes. Painful. I think Princess Nut Nut and co. will end up doing more damage than the virus.

Sam - if only they were less fanatical about keeping hold of power. Unfortunately I think you are right - the vituperation and lying will get worse as their folly is exposed.

Scrobs - I'll be the same - I won't give a monkey's by then.

djc - maybe trying to outdo each other in the subliminal suggestion game.

James - it is. I certainly see no real difference.
