As we see from the latest ONS chart, weekly observed all-cause deaths in all ages with the dominant circulating respiratory virus is now well below the five year baseline. No longer a problem then. No wonder people are demonstrating.

Given how sympathetic towards rioters the police seem to be (taking the knee, standing around while the cenotaph is damaged, praising the toppling of statues) people probably think rioting is a safe and healthy option. It gets you out of the house, and you are far more likely to be arrested if you are an elderly lady visiting a friend or cluttering up an isolated beauty-spot.
There will be people suffering longer if the lockdown is not lifted quickly. Yet you know and I know how the sensationalist press (most of it, including the BBC) will find any death after an early lifting of lockdown to be the blame of the Government no matter what. I expect the Government can survive such blame, but if the general population are sufficiently wound up to break the steady unfolding of the return to normal then any 'extra deaths' will be down to journalists exploiting sensationalism to sell papers/advertising. But they will escape blame too.
In my opinion the numbers above are heartening, the number of deaths involving COVID is decreasing and the vaccinations are progressing... but it would be totally devastating to relax controls too early and start all over again.
Sam - good point although those elderly ladies can be pretty waspish and liable to say hurtful things in penetrating voices.
DJ - that's the problem and the government knows it - lift the lockdown and the media will find their mendacious stories all over the place complete with sentimental personal accounts and photos of people in hospital.
I think the government knows the risk of lifting all lockdown measures tomorrow is small, but the media would root out their stories and in any event the government probably wants to accustom us to a much more restricted lifestyle in preparation for the ten point plan.
