One to avoid

The BBC will offer daily programmes to help parents and children with schoolwork at home during the lockdown.

Starting on 20 April, videos, quizzes, podcasts and articles will appear on BBC Bitesize Daily via the BBC iPlayer, red button, BBC Four and BBC Sounds.

A spectacular waste!

Some 25 years ago, BBC and CH4 were broadcasting a vast amount of schools material including some excellent series on science, geography, history and the arts, much of it using existing documentary footage packaged and presented in a way appropriate to the required key stage.

All of this must still be in the archives, yet it looks as if this new initiative, with its 'quizzes', podcasts and celebrity presenters, will use only purpose-made programmes whose creators sound delighted with their reinvention of the wheel.

Macheath - good point. Maybe science, geography and history have to be changed or woke presenters wouldn't understand any of it.

I think you are going to struggle to select a Dork of the Year for 2020. It is already starting to look like an epic. The BBC are entering the stakes. We have had all those panjandrums announcing lofty policy objectives with little Greta Thunberg sitting beside them with her baffled stare and feet off the ground. Piers and Peston are making astonishing progress with their inability to listen to anyone else's point of view but perhaps the award should not go to such flashy knaves and fools. Then there is Corbyn with his comments about how his election manifesto was widely derided and yet, here it is, being enacted. No one asks him whether he knew that covid19 was lurking round the corner. But perhaps he is too much the curmudgeon. To my mind the frontrunner is the Pope for his commanding display of pointless gesture-politics, giving his urbi et orbi address to an empty piazza. Presumably he was aspiring to outdo St Francis of Assisi preaching to the birds but with added wokeness. I can picture his mummy giving him a big hug afterwards and saying "but Frankie, no one's listening."

Graeme - you are right, I'm going to struggle with Dork of the Year 2020. One idea is to have Team Dork instead but I'll have to work on that.
