Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson, on the left, plants a small tree

The Conservative Party has said it will plant 30 million trees a year by 2025 if it wins the general election - as the Liberal Democrats pledged to plant twice as many trees in the same period.

The Tories' £640m fund would be used to plant trees and restore peatland.

Labour dismissed the scheme and said the prime minister had an "atrocious environmental record".

The Lib Dems would plant 60 million trees a year across the UK by 2025, leader Jo Swinson said.

What does Jeremy Corbyn have to offer in the tree planting competition? I suggest he doubles the Lib Dem offer and goes for 120 million. Then it is over to the Greens who must think in terms of 240 million a year at least.

I think the decision - eventually, after a long perusal of a HoC (gold-plated) calculator, will be made by Diane Abbott, and they will offer to plant three perches of Japanese Knotweed, a small palm tree and a splonder of cabbage.

The Magic Grandpa will oversee the operation as long as he remembers to bring a ladder!

Note how a few trees become instantly available as his term of office comes to an end and re election looms, cynical, moi !

I think Jeremy would be keen on alien invasive species which will vote for him out of gratitude. Oaks would be forbidden because they are redolent of British naval power and imperialism. Redwoods would be a challenge, because on the one hand "The people's tree is deepest red", but on the other hand it supports the Tory MP and anti-European of the same name.

Sam, there'll still be Labour's willow, bending every which way, being cut to accept a load of cricket balls, providing the NHS with even more salicin to assuage their discomfiture of Chalfonts and Abbotts, weeping over the results, and eventually falling over into the village pond to rot and feed the ducks!

(I hope the trees in Carfax still stand proud - that is one really famous view)!

Scrobs - from what we hear, Magic Grandpa never remembers anything.

Wiggia - and I bet money is no object too.

Sam - yes, looking after alien invasive species which will vote for him out of gratitude seems to have been Jeremy's strategy for many years. If he becomes PM...

Presumably the end result of this insanity is for some party to pledge to cover every inch of the country in trees...................

Sobers - I think some of them prefer trees to people.

Thirty million?

Do they know how big a million is?

The do realise, I suppose, that it equates to just over 82,000 trees every single day, 7 days a week and including bank holidays?

They do?

That's OK then; just wondering.

Peter - maybe they know how big a million is but don't really care if it is feasible or not
