Two thirds of our customers’ fraud cases start on Meta, Lloyds says

More than two thirds of fraud cases reported to Lloyds first targeted customers on Meta platforms, the bank’s head of fraud prevention has said.

Data from the banking giant shows those in their late twenties and early thirties are being reeled into scams on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, which are all owned by Meta.

Common scams included ticket fraud, particularly for concerts and sporting events such as Taylor Swift’s Eras tour and Premier League football matches.

Writing in the Sunday Times, Lloyds’ fraud prevention director Liz Ziegler said 68 per cent of fraud reports from their customers started on a Meta platform.

What proportion of people on "social platforms" use Meta platforms? More than 68% perhaps? If people want to sue Meta because that's where the money is they'd better hurry up before the markets go pop.

I refuse to use my phone for anything financial, as bunches of bananas don't bode well with paying for stuff, when the reality of parting with one's pension is at stake...

dearieme - I don't know what the proportion is, but I'd expect it to be large. There must be numerous correlations for the litigious to think about before the market goes pop. Are Meta users more likely to fall down stairs for example.

Scrobs - I know what you mean, I have to triple check the amounts involved when banking on my phone, an extra zero or two could be a problem.

Ultracareful is the watchword ... I have no smartphone for a start, avoid apps like the plague except ones like Safari.

James - I'm careful too. I have a smartphone with a few apps, but don't click unsolicited links and so on. Most scams seem to depend on gullibility more than sophisticated malware.

I don't have a smart phone either, nor have I been on any social media platforms save Linked In, which I resigned from years ago. I feel relatively protected.

Tammly - that's my impression, the less you connect the safer you are.
