We must prepare for madness

'We must prepare for conflict,' says Starmer with new weapons to down Putin missiles targeting UK 'homeland'

Britain must “prepare for conflict” by moving to be war ready to deter an attack by Vladimir Putin or other adversary, says Sir Keir Starmer.

The Prime Minister stressed that the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) aimed to keep the peace by strengthening the UK’s military and discouraging attacks on the homeland and its allies.

Good grief, what the blue blazes is the imbecile playing at now?

Has someone told him about Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands effect?

Stand by for numerous (somewhat unconvincing) photo-ops for our glorious leader aboard a battleship or perched atop a tank…

"new weapons to down Putin missiles": I'm a confirmed sceptic about all this shooting down missiles stuff. Anyway, too bloody late - the problem now is to stop the Ukes infuriating Putin such that he tries out one or two.

If he does attack the UK let us at least pray he attacks London.

In case of doubt, the only defence against ICBMs is, I assume, deterrence. Would Putin really risk Moscow and St Petersburg? I wonder how many Labour MPs are CND types?

"I know, Keir, the whole thing's utterly daft, but apparently some idiots are running around out there saying that you're not very patriotic. Ridiculous, but current levels of immigration, Chagos, the ECHR, and the whole Europe thing. It all adds up, and some of us are a bit worried about our majorities. Nothing's going to happen, of course, but Rachel's team have been working on it and they reckon that with the proposed Wealth Tax they can get the figures past the BBC. By the time the serious economists unravel it, it will be old news and anyway the public will be distracted by your Ukrainian boys going to court. Yes, yes, don't worry about that, either. All sorted.

So anyway, there's a flak jacket and one of those helmet thingies downstairs, but we can't do the pics in the rose garden, so we're off to Aldershot.

Oh him? He's a bulldog. Winston. No, he's really friendly. The copper on the door's going to look after him, you just need to be seen walking him from time to time. Now come on and get ready!

Macheath - oh dear, photo-ops incoming. I wish they wouldn't do it.

dearieme - I don't see how we'll even know if anything can be shot down. Countermeasures seem to develop as quickly as anything else.

Sam - ha ha, very good. I wish it wasn't so accurate though.

But 'preparing for conflict' requires more than a review, it needs actions to create factories to churn out munitions and vehicles, recruitment for the armed forces, and the will to use them.

The ideological problem for Starmer and Co is that bullets and missiles don't care who they kill; there's no way to protect only the worthy.

DJ - I agree, and instead we'll see photo ops, pronouncements about new funding which isn't new and media articles about 'new' weapons which were actually developed years ago.

We do not make steel. Or all the stuff that needs steel. We do not make aircraft. We are not good at making ships. (That work). We do not make the batteries that all our kit would be powered by. (sarc.) Our defence industry and the government experts who used to initiate and monitor the commercial companies who proceeded with development and manufacture have all been flogged off. To foreigners.
The default option is " Lets just buy what our bffs, the Americans, tell us to buy. "
If we were to change the education system now we might have people able to design and build and use such currently impossible stuff. In 20 or 30 years time.

Doonhamer - I agree, but according to Starmer and Reeves, we do make black holes, they ought to be of use for something.
