Crisis in Cornwall as locals have 'never seen it so empty

Cornwall locals have said the county has "never been so empty" despite tourism chiefs predicting a bumper year for visitors. Jon Hyatt, who chairs Visit Cornwall, blamed the cost-of-living crisis and bad weather at peak times on a drop in visitor numbers last year.

‘Bloody tourists’ don’t ‘get’ Cornwall, says tourism boss in charge of attracting visitors

Heading to Cornwall on holiday? Respect the locals, the region’s tourism boss has urged in an expletive-heavy tirade.

But according to Malcolm Bell - the outgoing chief executive of Visit Cornwall - some of these holidaymakers are “f***ing emmets”.

‘Emmet’ is an old English word for ant, and is a negative Cornish slang word for tourists.

Lots of different places around the world have locals upset over tourists. Some are imposing tourist taxes.

It's almost as if 'diversity' is being stretched to the limit. Surely not?

DJ - and we know who is doing the stretching.

The attitude is nothing new; back when we lived there thirty years ago, regularly-renewed graffiti on a bridge over the A30 read ‘English Go Home!’, while, on a recent visit, we got a wonderful quote from an elderly boatman:

“Arr, it’s lovely here in June but then the bloody emmets arrive with their wobbly-boxes…”

(Apparently it’s how the Cornish refer to caravans.)

"Some of these 'patients' are malingerers....some of these 'jobseekers' are workshy...some of these 'taxpayers' are fraudsters..."

I can see it catching on.

Petrol alone for such a trek is around £150.00, so why spend all that time in a car when there are so many better places to visit - like the garden at home...
I can watch Jethro any time on YouTube, anyway!

Cornwall still has "locals"?
Not just rich incomers who have paid a lot of money for rustic charm and don't want it spoiled.

Anon - we never visit Cornwall these days, it's too far, but over the years it does seem to have attracted a reputation for viewing tourists as "bloody emmets."

Sam - let's hope so. 'Some of these Ministers are idiots..."

Scrobs - we're drifting in the same direction, especially now we can sit in the garden with coffee and dark chocolate.

Doonhamer - indeed, the rich incomers will be the ones with influence.
