BBC boss offers major update on 'reform' of TV licence fee
BBC director-general Tim Davie has said he supports "reform" in the way the corporation is funded. The Government is set to launch the review of the BBC's Charter, looking at how it should be funded, after committing to increasing the licence fee in line with inflation each year until 2027...
Mr Davie said: "I want to justify the value that we have. I want that protected.
"I think there is reform (needed) in terms of potential (changes to the) licence fee, how progressive it is, and you'll debate the enforcement question."
He added that he does "not want the same system" in the future, but said: "I do want universal funding, and I want a proper investigation of begrudging, grinding cuts that we've seen over the last 10 years, which has just not helped."
And there we have it - "I do want universal funding..." Apparently there is to be no free choice in BBC Land, not that we ever thought otherwise.

On the other hand, Mr Lineker has gone. If only they'd sack Mr Shearer too the worst of the football "experts" would have been removed. I recommend they bring back Mr Hansen: he knew more about football than those louts and had a far better voice too.
Even better, bring back the test cricket.
Even, even better: sell the bloody business off.
You need quite a lot of Chutzpah to say that while you are extending the begging-bowl. "I want you to pay for everything I want to do, and let's not have you being as stingy as before"!
Yes, matey, we'll pay you a ton of money so a bunch of Asian Oxbridge types can say "Trumpy-Dumpy is a racist" to a background of canned laughter. Churlish of us to object, really.
dearieme - blimey, is Shearer still there? Yes Hansen was much better, he came across as someone who understood the professional game where the other two just played it. Sell it off though, it's the only way. Must be worth something with all that old material.
Sam - yes, our superiors think we should pay and that's it, no skiving off just because you never watch it.
How about the licence fee is reduced to £10 per annum and collected through the tax system. For that we get BBC news and local news - as a public service - and nothing more. Everything else is paid for by voluntary subscription or advertising.... and if that means a substantial reduction in management numbers and salary then that's too bad.
DJ - that would work in that it would deliver the traditional BBC service, but of course it's also the problem, they don't want a solution which delivers. They want celebrities, huge salaries, personal tax schemes and propaganda.
Their funding should be whatever they can raise by selling stuff from a pasting table outside BBC HQ
“They don't want a solution which delivers. They want celebrities, huge salaries, personal tax schemes and propaganda.”
In one.
Bucko - ah, you've sold stuff from a pasting table too. I bet BBC bods don't know what they are.
James - thanks, although they make it so easy.
He/she/it/them is being a bit optimistic.
The universe is big, maybe infinite. Like his budget.
Why not start small, with, say, national "funding"?
Doonhamer - maybe they are thinking ahead and plan to charge Elon Musk when he moves to Mars.
