GIGO Reeves
Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves have been reduced to uttering total garbage
They could actually have regained some trust. They could actually have demonstrated integrity. They could even have inspired respect. All they needed to tell us was that, in retrospect, the cut to the winter fuel allowance had been a mistake, that it had gone down badly with the voters and that they were prepared to admit they'd got it wrong. Simple.
But no. Oh no. This Labour government is so lacking in any common decency, let alone competence, and so devoid of any sense of honesty, that it chose to pretend that a decision that the whole country knows was forced upon it for political expediency was actually taken because the economy is now apparently "strong enough".
A fine example of garbage in, garbage out (GIGO).
In goes a (politically) garbage policy.
Out comes a garbage rationale.

It'll prove a mess, with people who don't normally do self-assessment tax returns having to do them. And yet it would be dead easy just to add it to the State Retirement Pension so that it's taxable in the ordinary way.
dearieme - I didn't know that, just assumed it would be automatic.
This looks like one of those cases where they are not lying to fool others. They are lying to show that they can, and get away with it. We will all, in time, come to realise that "holding them to account" or showing how they are hypocrites, is a pointless waste of time.
The current scheme seems to be that they'll hand the money to all pensioners and then claim it all back from any pensioner who is part of a couple where either has an income of >£35k. Divorce lawyers must be rubbing their hands with glee.
Sam - yes, holding them to account is pointless. The resources available to a liar are limitless, which is bound to attract charlatans. The only way to bring them down seems to be failures their supporters won't tolerate.
dearieme - thanks, in that case your solution is the one they should have adopted - add it to the State Retirement Pension so that it's taxable in the ordinary way. Looks like yet another example of bureaucrats deliberately promoting bureaucracy.
